How TagKicks Works

TagKicks sneaker tattoo transfers are designed to help you turn plain sneakers into wearable art. Each sheet includes mirror-printed artwork made for sneaker customisation, especially smooth white leather-style sneaker panels.

The artwork is printed in reverse, so it appears the correct way once transferred onto the shoe.

1. Plan Your Layout First

Before cutting or applying anything, study the shoe and decide where each artwork piece will sit.

For best results, apply TagKicks transfers to flatter sneaker panels, especially side panels and smoother upper areas.

Avoid applying transfers to:

  • High-flex zones
  • Toe box bend lines
  • Deep crease areas
  • Rubber soles
  • Midsoles
  • Mesh
  • Suede
  • Heavy texture
  • Raised leather overlaps
  • Stitch-heavy areas

Do not force one large transfer across multiple leather layers, seams, or raised panel edges. It is better to cut the artwork into smaller pieces and apply each piece cleanly to one panel.

2. Make A Simple Tape Template

For cleaner placement, use low-tack masking tape to create a rough shoe panel template.

Place tape over the side panel of the shoe. Lightly trace the panel shape, stitch lines, and edges.

Remove the tape and use it as a guide before cutting your tattoo artwork.

This helps you plan the artwork placement, avoid high-flex areas, and stop the design from crossing raised leather layers or seams.

3. Use The “Try Me First” Test Patch

Each TagKicks sheet includes a small “Try Me First” test patch.

Use this small test piece before applying the main artwork to your shoes.

This lets you practise the process, check your surface prep, test how the transfer releases, understand drying time, and check finisher compatibility before committing to the final design.

We strongly recommend applying the Try Me First patch on a hidden or less visible area first.

Do not skip this step if you are using TagKicks transfers for the first time.

4. Cut The Artwork Carefully

Keep the adhesive/protective sheet on the artwork while cutting.

Cut around the artwork as close as possible. This helps minimise the visible adhesive edge on the shoe.

For best results, cut the design into smaller controlled pieces instead of using one large piece. Smaller pieces usually sit flatter, follow sneaker panels better, and reduce the risk of lifting around seams, stitching, and leather overlaps.

Do not remove the adhesive/protective sheet yet. Only remove it when the artwork is fully cut, the shoe is prepared, and you are ready to apply.

5. Prep The Shoe Surface

Start with a clean shoe surface. Remove dirt, oils, dust, and factory finish before applying the transfer.

Use a suitable sneaker deglazer or acetone to prepare the application area.

For better grip, lightly scuff the area using 1500 grit sandpaper.

Use very light pressure. Do not damage the leather. The goal is only to create a slightly better surface for the transfer to hold.

After sanding, clean the area again with deglazer or acetone and allow it to dry fully before applying the transfer.

Use acetone and deglazer carefully, away from flames, heat, and poor ventilation.

6. Remove The Adhesive Sheet Right Before Application

Once the artwork is cut and the shoe surface is ready, remove the adhesive/protective sheet only right before applying.

After the sheet is removed, do not touch the artwork or adhesive area with your fingers. Fingerprints, oils, or marks can affect the finish.

Handle the transfer carefully from the edges.

7. Apply In One Go

Place the transfer onto the prepared shoe panel carefully.

Try to apply it in the correct position the first time. Once the transfer sticks to the shoe, repositioning it may damage the artwork.

Work slowly and gently. Do not stretch, drag, or force the artwork over raised edges, seams, or leather overlaps.

If the design needs to cross a seam or leather layer, cut it into separate pieces instead.

8. Apply Water And Smooth Gently

Apply water as required and allow the transfer to release onto the shoe.

Do not touch the wet print with your fingers.

The print is sensitive while wet, so handle everything gently.

Use a soft brush to carefully smooth the artwork, remove small bubbles, and fix any lifting edges.

Do not scrape, rub aggressively, or press too hard.

9. Let It Dry Fully

Once applied, do not touch the artwork while it dries.

Allow the transfer to dry fully before bending, wearing, or sealing the shoe.

We recommend leaving the design to dry for around 24 hours before applying any protective finisher.

10. Seal With Matte Finisher

Once the artwork is fully dry, seal it with a suitable sneaker or leather finisher.

For best results, use a matte finisher such as Angelus Matte Finisher.

Apply several light coats instead of one heavy coat. Let each coat dry properly before applying the next one.

Important Notes

TagKicks transfers are made for sneaker customisation projects. Final durability depends on surface preparation, placement, application method, drying time, sealing, and how the shoes are worn.

Always test first using the Try Me First patch before applying the main artwork to your final pair.
